Courtyard Housing

Multi-family Housing
14 units  |  900 square feet
The project is an exploration into the courtyard housing type. The introverted nature of the project finds little in common with its neighbors but finds connection with the history of Los Angeles and its people. Here the wall boldly marks the beginning of the private domain. In this very secluded place, interior and exterior rooms become equal. With only a framed view of the sky above, the housing units become de-contextualized, and the loud, fast, and hot urban environment is replaced with a quiet, tranquil and cool place to live. Continuous wall and roof elements unify the building but respond to the changing conditions around the building in terms of access to sunlight and degrees of privacy. The low, horizontal nature of the building is contrasted by areas of vertical cacti.
